Not all eggs are created equal.

I think one of our chickens qualifies for the gifted and talented program. You can't even shut the lid on some of her eggs. Ouch!
(Fyi- we don't wash our eggs until we are ready to use them because the natural seal the chicken leaves on them makes them last longer, but it looks gross sometimes.)

Speaking of eggs... my girls have been selling our eggs to a couple of neighbors and saving the money to do something egg-citing. Ruby has become the manager of this operation and is a little obsessed. She gets mad when I use too many eggs reducing her sell-able dozens. If you are local and want organic free range eggs from the coolest chicks in town, give Ruby a call.

That egg is insane!

Do you have any araucanas? They are supposed to lay eggs anywhere from pinkish to blue to olive hued.

My kids can't wait to sell eggs too!

We have 3 auracanas, 3 buff orphingtons and 2 barred rocks (I probably spelled them all wrong). The aracana eggs are like a light green, sometimes light blue, sometimes green with a blue tip and their eggs are smaller.
They are my favorite eggs because they are soooo easy to crack open neatly. When I was trying to figure out what to sell our eggs for I read about one guy that sells his auracana eggs for $6 a dozen in Santa Barbara. We sell all our eggs for $3 a dozed and just mix in all the different kinds. My kids refuse to sell our JUMBO eggs, or eat them. We may blow them and decorate them for Easter.
Good luck with your girls!

There's a dad at our school who sells eggs and uses his profit for the college funds. I think I'm more like Ruby though. College seems so far off...

Is Ruby purchasing the chicken feed and other supplies or is she being subsidized? I think it would be egg-citing to teach a little economics 101.

Greg- If we really did an economics 101 and tried to cover the all the costs with her egg sales, she would need to sell the eggs for like $5 each.

The exciting thing she wants to do is for our family to go to the cost for 2 nights... again, if that is not also subsidized that coast trip may not happen for 10 years.
We are just letting them have fun with it.

Perhaps you need more chickens . . . Then again, it is probably better they way it is. Who wants to live on a large egg ranch?

So has she converted from a fashion stylist to an egg producer?? I think that is awesome. Go Ruby!
