Magic
Our friends told my kids that it's possible to get a chicken to sleep on it's back. This afternoon after church Ruby officially became the chicken whisperer. She can get them to relax and lay totally still on their backs. Some even fall asleep- it's crazy!
They look dead, but they are not. She just calms them down and rubs their bellies until they get totally relaxed then lays them in the grass and they stay there. She was pretty impressed with her new skill.
Accomplished chicken whisperer... there's one more thing she can add to her college application.

Whispering is indeed a very important skill. :-) The same technique works well on children.
Oh wow! I really thought at first that they were dead. That is a really cool talent. Maybe she can try that with babies and little kids when she is old enough to babysit.
Can she do this with 5 and 7 year old boys too??
I want to know more so I can try it with our chickens! My kids will be so impressed.
Melissa-
I have to be honest, I have not been able to do it so I may not be the best person to tell you how. But Ruby makes it look sooo easy.
She just holds them with one hand (under their body) so their legs hang down. She pets their back while she talks to them softly saying "it's ok...it's ok" until they stop moving and are relaxed. Then she puts her other hand on their back and turns them slowly. Usually their head will try to stay upright as she turns the body completely upside down. She holds them upside down for about a minute then carefully sets them down. They will stay on their back like that for along time or until they hear a loud noise. Good luck!
Yep, this is one for her permanent record!
